Blood donors needed as dengue case continue to rise

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) is urging the public to donate blood as dengue patients continue to rise in the country.

According to PRC Secretary-General, Gwendolyn Pang blood is most needed in the National Capital Region (NCR). She also said that there is no blood shortage at the moment but, if the number of dengue cases continues to rise, there may not be supplies for patients who need immediate blood transfusions.

Secretary-General Pang estimates that two out of five dengue patients need blood transfusions. She also that not all dengue patients need blood transfusions but those who do will need at least three units of blood, and patients with severe dengue cases will need at least 10 to 16 bags of blood.

Data from the Department of Health (DOH) show that over 9,000 patients out of around 40,000 dengue cases nationwide were recoded from Metro Manila between January to July this year.

DOH also said that the country needs about 950,000 bags of blood a year for patients who need about five bags of blood at a time, however, only around 600,000 bags were collected on 2010.
