Typhoon Mina Friday Weather Update

Typhoon "Mina" was located 170 km East of Casiguran, Aurora on Friday, August 26 according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

Bagyong Mina has maximum sustained winds of 150 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 185 kph and is forecast to move Northwest at 9 kph.

Bagyong Mina Update: Tropical Depression Mina intensified into a Tropical Storm

According to Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical And Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), on Tuesday, August 23, Tropical Depression “Mina” has intensified into a Tropical Storm.

Tropical Storm "Mina" was estimated at 355 km East Northeast of Virac, Catanduanes with maximum winds of 65 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph.

PAGASA said that "Bagyong Mina" is forecast to move North at a very slow speed of 5 kph.




Filipino OFW reported missing in Tripoli, Libya

An overseas Filipino worker (OFW) was reported missing in Tripoli, Libya after Libyan rebels broke into the place where the Pinoy was working.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed the report when DFA spokesman, Raul Hernandez told the media regarding the report of the missing Filipino in Libya.

DFA officials trapped inside Philippine Embassy in Tripoli

Some Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) officials are trapped inside the Philippine Embassy in Tripoli as violence escalate in Libya.

DFA Spokesman Raul Hernandez told dwIZ over a radio interview that the International Organization for Migration (IOM) advised the Philippine foreign officials not to venture outside the embassy at the moment.




Tropical Depression Mina Storm Update Tuesday, August 22

According to the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the Tropical Depression "Mina" is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon and will bring scattered to widespread rains over Southern Luzon and Visayas.

Tropical Depression "Mina" was located 350 km East Southeast of Virac, Catanduanes and has maximum sustained winds of 45 kph near the center.




US Senate bill recognizes Filipino World War II veterans

World War II Filipino veterans may soon be officially recognized in California history textbooks for their contributions in the war after the United States Senate passed a bill to recognized Pinoy WWII veterans.

The US Senate passed the California bill AB 199, "Filipinos in WWII Social Studies Curriculum Act," with a 37-2 vote last Thursday (Friday in Manila).




2011 Norway shooting and bombing attacks national ceremony

On Sunday, Norway holds a national ceremony in remembrance to the 77 victims of the 2011 Norway shooting and bombing attacks.

Anders Behring Breivik, a Norwegian right-wing extremist and the confessed perpetrator of the 2011 Norway shooting incident on the island of Utøya where he killed 69 people and the bombing of government buildings in Oslo that resulted in eight deaths.

Student couple caught having sex inside a car jailed and facing charges

Two students that were caught having sex inside a car were jailed and are facing criminal charges after they fled from the police officers.

Topnotchers of the 2011 Physician Board Exam

Majority of the topnotchers in the recent Physician Licensure Examination came from The University of the Philippines (UP) Manila, followed by the examiners from the University of Santo Tomas (UST).

However, the second examiner who got the highest rating from the August 2011 Physician Board examination results is from the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM).

Below is the arrangement of the list of topnotchers who gained the highest scores in the August 2011 Physician Licensure Examination.




2011 Result of Physician Board Examination Passers

The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) released the result of the August 2011 Physician Board Examination passers.

PRC announced on Wednesday that 1,605 out of 2,131 passed the Physician Licensure Examination which was given by the Board of Medicine in the cities of Manila, Cebu and Davao.

A possible answer for gas and oil problems in the Philippines is being cooked by the government, as the Philippines may soon become the owner of an undersea land that is said to be larger than Luzon which is also potentially rich in gas and oil.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Secretary Ramon Paje said the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Seas (UNCLOS) may approve the Philippines' claim over Benham Rise by mid-2012.




DFA warns Filipinos in Syria alert level raised to 3

Due to the increasing violence in Syria, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has raised the alert level in the country to 3, which means all Filipinos working and residing in Syria are urged to voluntarily leave the country.

Although the Philippine government has not heard of any Filipinos harmed in Syria, it would not wait for any untoward incident to happen before a plan is put in place.

Dr. Manny Calayan's West Hollywood Clinic was shut down

After a sting operation by the Medical Board of California, the West Hollywood Clinic of the celebrity doctor Manny Calayan was shut down after the boar received complaints regarding improper medical practice.

A search warrant was served at Calayan’s West Hollywood clinic after they received complaints that the Calayan Medical Clinic had opened a medical practice in Los Angeles where cosmetic surgical procedures, including laser and Botox treatments, were being performed.




Those killed and injured in the Mangudadatu attempted assassination

The attempted assassination of Maguindanao Gov. Esmael "Toto" Mangudadatu on Monday using a car bomb which exploded as the governor's convoy was passing by, killed two people and injured six others.

Directorate for Integrated Police Operations in Western Mindanao, Police Director, Felicisimo Khu said that the explosion hit a black Toyota Fortuner (LGU 933) owned by Datu Russman Sinsuat, which is part of Mangudadatu's convoy.

Blood donors needed as dengue case continue to rise

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) is urging the public to donate blood as dengue patients continue to rise in the country.

According to PRC Secretary-General, Gwendolyn Pang blood is most needed in the National Capital Region (NCR). She also said that there is no blood shortage at the moment but, if the number of dengue cases continues to rise, there may not be supplies for patients who need immediate blood transfusions.

2011 Teen Choice Awards - Fil-Am Stars Voted as Teen Favorites

Dragon Warriors triumphs in the International Dragon Boat Federation World Championships

The Philippine Dragon Boat team once again triumphed in the International Dragon Boat Federation World Championships in Tampa Bay, Florida by winning the last event.

The Dragon Warriors wins the last event of the world championships, the Nationals dominated the 500 meter event in the men's small boat division, giving the Dragon Warriors their 5th gold medal.
